Stefanie Harjes studied illustration and painting at Hamburg and Prag. Since 1994 she is working in her studio “Uberm Wind”. As freelancing illustrator she mainly works for book and journal publishers. Her stop-motion-film “Sleeping Beauty” was broadcasted in 2003. Her works have been awarded many times, and she received the Austrian Childrens- and Youthbook Price together with Karla Schneider for their joint work “Die Hauser der Selma Khnopff” (Residenz Verlag, 2004) in 2005. Since 2008 she taught illustration at the Hamburg University of Applied Arts and in 2009 got awarded the Hamburger Lehrpreis for exceptional teaching. In 2010 she was nominated for the DJLP (Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis) with “Wenn ich das 7. GeiBlein war’” (Boje Verlag, Text: Karla Schneider, and in 2016 with “Konstantin im Worterwald” (mixtvision Verlag, Text: Martin Heckmanns). Her book “Von Meerjungfrauen, Kapitanen & fliegenden Fischen” (Boje Verlag, Textcompilation: Renate Raecke) got the the special mention of the Bologna Ragazzi Award in 2013. Her works are shown in singular and groupexhibitions internationally. Furthermore she gives lectures, leads seminars and workshops. From 2008 to 2009 she taught illustration at the Hamburg University of Applied Arts and in 2009 got awarded the Hamburger Lehrpreis for exceptional teaching.

Key Idea

The protagonist Dshamilja is a very strong and emancipated young woman. Even she is grasping and realistic in the hard years of Second World War, she has a soft and dreamy side. I wanted to show her as a sensitive woman who fell deeply in love.
